Questions & Answers

1. Can I change the cards of all family members on one go?

You can change all the cards you bring with you. However, we ask you to be considerate of other customers especially at peak times. Because the customer service staff at R kiosks and Stockmann department stores cannot see the personal data stored in the card, they do not verify the customer’s identity and no authorization is needed for changing another person’s card.

2. I have several Travel Cards; can I change all of them?

You can change all personal and multi-user Travel Cards you have at the same time. If you want to transfer e.g. value from one card to another, you need to visit a Travel Card service point and pay a processing fee.

If you have at some point reported your Travel Card lost and it has been cancelled, it cannot be changed and you need to buy a new card. In problematic cases it is best to visit a Travel Card service point whose staff can verify the customer’s identity.

3. Where can I change my card?

Cards can be changed at Travel Card service points, as well as at R kiosks and Stockmann department stores in the Helsinki metropolitan area. A more detailed list of service points is available here.

4. Pupil Travel Cards

Travel Cards loaded with pupils’ tickets granted by the card owner’s home municipality will be changed to new ones next summer at the same time when a new period ticket for the following school year is loaded onto the pupils’ cards. If the card owner or his/her parents load value onto the Travel Card during the school year e.g. at an R kiosk, the card is changed to a new one and all the information on the old card is transferred to the new one.

5. I load my card at vending machines, VR booking offices or kiosks. Where can I change my card?

To change your Travel Card, you need to visit one of the ticket sales points that change cards, i.e. Travel Card service points, R kiosks or Stockmann department stores. You can load your old card until 1 February 2010 and use it for traveling for one year after the beginning of the card change period.

6. Will I get a new card holder?

Because many customers have card holders that are still usable, the holders are not changed automatically for environmental and economic reasons. If you want to keep your current card holder, remove the old card from the holder before changing cards and place the new card in the holder. If you need a new card holder, you can get one at a Travel Card service point.

7. What will happen to the old cards after the change?

The personal data stored in the cards has been removed and the cards have been deactivated in the change process. The cards will nonetheless be disposed of in a secure manner. The cards are made of PVC plastic and they contain e.g. metal which means that they cannot be reused.

8. Can I load the new card online?

Not yet. According to current estimates, online loading and ticket purchase will become possible in early 2011.

9. Can I use my old Travel Card?

The old Travel Card can be used for traveling for one year after the beginning of the card change. The old Travel Card cannot be loaded after 1 February 2010. The card is changed automatically when you load it or you can visit a sales point to change the card. Cards are changed free of charge for one year and after that customers can change their cards and transfer the period ticket and/or value left on the old card to the new one at certain service points for two years.

10. How do I use the new card?

There are no changes to the loading and use of the Travel Card.

11. Does the new card affect the prices of journeys across municipal boundaries?

Not at this stage. At present, passengers cannot utilize their period tickets when traveling outside their validity zone, i.e. passengers do not benefit from a valid internal period ticket when traveling across zone boundaries. We want to improve the system so that passengers can benefit from their valid period ticket.

YTV prepares to extend the Helsinki metropolitan area fare and ticketing system to cover the provinces of Uusimaa (excluding Hanko) and Itä-Uusimaa, as well as the Riihimäki region. Prices of period tickets will be based on zones, as at present. The zones will also in future be based on municipal boundaries but municipalities can form integrated fare zones. A period ticket is a good choice for regular users of public transport also in future.

12. I have a direct debit Travel Card, what should I do?

The change of cards does not affect YTV’s direct debit system. Direct debit will continue normally also after your card has been changed.

However, the direct debit system will change in the coming years. We endeavor to offer our direct debit customers a flexible way of paying for a ticket that is continuously valid also in future. We will inform our direct debit customers of the changes well before they take effect.

13. Is it possible to monitor where and how I travel?

Personal information is not given out to third parties unless required by law or authorities. In the present system, the latest use of the card is registered in the system, including registration of period ticket or value transaction and possible attempts of use. The transaction data includes date, time, type of transaction, ticket type, bus operator code, bus route, direction and vehicle number.

The rights to update and check Travel Card customer data is held by those employees of YTV to whose responsibilities it belongs and by employees of the Travel Card service points. These persons are obligated to keep the information confidential. They have the right to screen the information concerning the period ticket and value loadings of the customer’s Travel Card as well as the latest value transactions only at the customer’s request.
